Designing Hindi Voice AI: Lessons from 50,000 Conversations
Tone, code-mixing and accents — what we learned building Hindi voice AI and vernacular AI for customers across India.
After 50,000+ conversations across 14 states, one thing is clear: building Hindi voice AI isn't a translation problem, it's a product-design problem. Here's what we learned tuning AURA's vernacular AI for real Indian customers.
Code-mixing is the default, not the exception
Real customers don't speak pure Hindi or pure English — they speak the in-between. 'Sir, appointment 4 baje ke liye book kar dijiye' is more natural than either extreme. We trained AURA's code-mixing AI to match the user's register turn by turn, not lock into one language — which is what a real multilingual chatbot India needs.
Politeness markers carry meaning
Dropping 'ji' or 'aap' isn't just stylistic — it changes the perceived trust of the brand. AURA defaults to formal address and only relaxes when the customer signals comfort first. Our A/B test on a finance customer showed a 14% lift in completion when we stayed formal end-to-end versus shifting casual after the first turn.
Regional accents need acoustic, not just lexical, handling
A Bhojpuri-accented English 'order' sounds nothing like a Bangalore-accented one. We fine-tuned acoustic models on regional Indian English so AURA's regional language voice bot understands the same word across accents instead of forcing customers to 'speak clearly'. Strong Indic language AI starts at the acoustic layer.
What we throw away after every release
- Direct machine translations of US-trained prompts
- Generic salutations like 'Hello, how can I help you today?'
- Long sentences with subordinate clauses (Hindi listeners drop off)
- Numbers spoken in English when the rest of the sentence is Hindi
The day we stopped translating English prompts and started writing in Hindi from scratch, our CSAT jumped from 4.1 to 4.7.
